D'Antoni New Knicks Coach

New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations Donnie Walsh announced today that Mike D’Antoni has been named the 24th head coach in the franchise’s 62-year history. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

D’Antoni has compiled a .608 winning percentage (267-172) in six seasons as an NBA head coach with the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets. Named NBA Coach of the Year in 2004-05, D’Antoni has guided the Suns to 54 or more wins in each of the last four seasons while earning a reputation as one of the top offensive minds in the game. The Mullens, WV native brings over three decades of professional basketball experience to New York as a player, coach, front office executive and scout in the NBA, ABA and the Italian League.

D’Antoni guided the Suns to the postseason in each of the last four seasons, including consecutive trips to the Western Conference Finals in 2005 and 2006. After coaching Denver during the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season, D’Antoni went overseas and led Benetton Treviso to the 2002 Italian League Championship before being named head coach of the Suns 21 games into the 2003-04 season. The 57-year old D’Antoni coached the 2007 Western Conference All-Star Team and currently serves as an assistant coach for USA Basketball’s Men’s Senior National Team that will compete in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Kobe Wins The MVP

Kobe Bryant has been selected the NBA's most valuable player for the first time in his 12-year career, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Bryant, 29, has won three championships with the Los Angeles Lakers and is widely regarded as the league's premier talent. But he had never come close to winning an MVP before this season — he was third in voting last year, his highest finish.

Bryant averaged 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists in the regular season. More importantly, he led the Lakers to a 57-25 record and the top seed in the rugged Western Conference.

The award figured to go to either Bryant, New Orleans point guard Chris Paul or Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett.

Bryant, second in the NBA in scoring behind Cleveland's LeBron James, will be the first Lakers player to win the MVP award since Shaquille O'Neal was a near-unanimous choice in 2000. Other previous Lakers to win the award dating to 1956, when it was first presented, were Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, who each won it three times. Abdul-Jabbar also won three with the Milwaukee Bucks.

The NBA announced today that Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics is the recipient of the 2007-08 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award presented by Kia Motors.

Garnett helped the Celtics to league-best records of 66-16 (.805) overall and 31-10 (.738) on the road. Boston held opponents to just 90.3 points (second in the NBA) after allowing 99.2 points per game a season ago. Garnett led the Celtics to the biggest one-year turnaround in NBA history as the team won 42 more games this season than in 2006-07 (24-58), surpassing the previous record of 36 games, set by the San Antonio Spurs in the 1997-98 season.

Knicks great Patrick Ewing was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in his first appearance on the ballot.

Ewing, now an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic, received a tribute and warm reception at the Garden Sunday night when the Magic and Knicks played. He is being enshrined with Adrian Dantley, Hakeem Olajuwon, former Knicks coach Pat Riley, Immaculata College coach Cathy Rush and announcer Dick Vitale.

Ewing will become the 13th Knick player to be inducted and first since Bob McAdoo in 2000. He finished his career in 2000 as the Knicks' No. 1 all-time scorer and rebounder and their leader in many other categories. He had his No. 33 retired in 2003 after a 17-year NBA career.

Although no official recovery timetable has been established, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said Sunday that the club expects to be without star forward Dirk Nowitzki for at least two weeks after Nowitzki suffered what the team termed a "left lower leg injury" in the third quarter of Sunday's 88-81 loss to San Antonio.

Sources close to Nowitzki indicated Sunday night that a post-game MRI exam, like earlier X-rays, turned up no immediate issues with the knee.

Nowitzki crumpled to the floor and clutched his left leg in agony after attempting to block a shot by San Antonio's Ime Udoka. Nowitzki's leg appeared to fold and twist awkwardly after Udoka's right leg came down on Nowitzki's as they landed.

Eli Manning and the New York Giants have a new backup quarterback

David Carr signed Wednesday in a move that gives the Super Bowl champions an experienced backup who like Manning was a No. 1 pick overall.

Taken first by Houston in the 2002 draft, Carr's career has faltered in recent seasons. He was released by the Texans after the 2006 season and signed a two-year, $6 million deal last year with the Carolina Panthers.

The Panthers released him after this past season.

Carr had a 58.3 passer rating with just three touchdown passes and five interceptions after replacing the injured Jake Delhomme. Carr was eventually replaced by 44-year-old Vinny Testaverde and then undrafted rookie Matt Moore.

Favre Era Is Over!

Brett Favre has decided to retire from the NFL after 17 seasons.

The Green Bay Packers quarterback informed the team in the last few days. ESPN.com said that according to Favre's agent, Bus Cook, the quarterback told coach Mike McCarthy of his decision.

Only two years removed from perhaps his worst season, Favre had a resurgence in 2007 He broke several career records. Among them was Dan Marino's career mark for career touchdown passes. He powered the Packers to an NFC North title and a 13-3 regular-season record. He was named to his ninth Pro Bowl.

Kobe Bryant was diagnosed with a torn ligament in his right pinkie finger Thursday and the Lakers All-Star has decided not to undergo surgery that could sideline him for six weeks.

The damage occurred when Bryant dislocated the finger at New Jersey on Feb. 5, and was aggravated in Wednesday night's game at Minnesota.

The team said Thursday that the damage was more extensive than first believed. There is a complete tear of the radial collateral ligament and avulsion fracture, in which a small bone fragment had been pulled off by a tendon.

Knicks Lose Marbury For The Season

After undergoing ankle surgery that turned out to be more complicated that initially thought, New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury will miss the rest of the season according to a published report.

The surgery to remove bone spurs from Marbury's left ankle was expected to be a 30-minute procedure, according to the New York Post. But a source told the newspaper it turned out to be much more complicated and took Dr. William Hamilton two hours to perform the operation.

Marbury had missed 17 games before his surgery, mostly after his father died in December, and was averaging a career-low 13.9 points.

The deal allows the Grizzlies to gain salary cap relief, as Brown is in the final year of a deal that pays $9,075,000.

Things go from bad to worse for the Miami Dolphins, who lost running back Ronnie Brown for the rest of the season because of a knee injury.

Brown will need surgery to repair a torn ACL, coach Cam Cameron said Monday. He twisted his right knee in the third quarter of the Dolphins' 49-28 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday.

Brown has been one of the few bright spots in Miami's bleak season. Coming into Sunday's game, he led the NFL in yards from scrimmage and had reached the 100-yard rushing mark for four consecutive games.

Tom Brady was flawless at the start and off the bench, too. With his team winning easily, Brady came out of the game early in the fourth quarter Sunday, then re-entered to throw a team-record sixth touchdown pass, capping unbeaten New England's 49-28 rout of the winless Miami Dolphins.

Brady's TD total exceeded his career high of five, set last week against Dallas. Brady now has 27 TD passes after seven games. The NFL record is 49 set by Peyton Manning in 2004. If Brady maintains his current pace over 16 games, he would finish with 61.

Don Mattingly has been making managerial moves with the New York Yankees for several seasons — in his head. "I've heard that experience thing come up a lot," he said, "but in my own mind I've been managing for the last four years, and to be honest with you, as a player you're playing along the whole time."

After four seasons as a coach, Mattingly was interviewed Tuesday to replace departed manager Joe Torre. Yankees broadcaster Joe Girardi interviewed a day earlier, and first base coach Tony Pena is due to speak with team officials Wednesday.

Cursing or venturing onto the court could draw college basketball coaches a quick technical foul this season.

The NCAA is making bench decorum a point of emphasis for 2007-08 and warns coaches to expect a whistle without warning for a variety of unsportsmanlike actions.

The actions that can draw a technical include disrespectfully addressing an official or attempting to influence an official's decision, using abusive or profane language, taunting an opponent, inciting undesirable crowd reactions and coming onto the court without permission of an official to attend to an injured player.

The rules will also apply to assistant coaches, other team personnel and players on the bench.

Officials who consistently enforce the rules will be given preferential consideration for conference and NCAA tournament assignments.

The 2007 NFL season is well underway with both the Giants and Jets attempting to make a repeat playoff appearance. The two teams reloaded this season with a couple of new additions including for the Jets former Chicago Bears running back Thomas Jones and the Giants drafting former Texas University star corner back Aaron Ross.
The Giants kicked off the season on the road for a Sunday night showdown against the Dallas Cowboys ending in a 45 – 35 loss with the Giants defense proving to be powerless to stop Cowboys Wide receiver Terrell Owens who had two touchdowns. The next game did fair any better for the G Men as they fell to Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers at home 35 – 13 dropping them to a dismal 0 – 2. The winning began in Washington against the Redskins who were shutdown by the resurgent Giants Defense to a score of 24 – 17 leaving the Skins with their first loss of the season. This past Sunday at home the Giants trampled the Eagles with an impressive 12 sack performance and 6 alone by Defensive End Osi Umenyiora to defeat the Eagles 16 – 3 improving their record to 2 – 2.
The Jets began the 2007 season losing in a controversial game to division rival New England losing 38 – 14 because of suspected cheating by the Patriots. The Jets followed up with another loss this time against the Baltimore Ravens as quarterback Kellen Clemens got his first start in the NFL with the score of 20 – 13. A returning Chad Pennington helped get the Jets a win against the Miami Dolphins 31 – 28 at home putting their record at 1 – 2. This past Sunday the Jets offense was silenced by the then winless Buffalo Bills only managing 14 points to the Bills 17 stalling their record to 1 - 3 tied for last in the division.
The Jets and Giants cross paths this Sunday at the Meadowlands each seeking a big momentum pushing win to start the second quarter of the season. The Giants are favored at home but past match ups between these two teams have made this game anyone’s guess.

26th of September of this year. Honestly, I have no
problem with the Yanks’ acquisition of the Wild Card,
I’m just happy that they even made it in to the
play-offs this year. Majority of fans around the
league love to degrade the team that enters the
post-season as Wild Cards as weak, vulnerable and very
easy to eliminate. In my view, the Wild Card spot has
brung the Yankees together in order to focus more on
proving the whole league wrong by demonstrating that
they are as strong as any of the Division Champions.
If you think Wild Cards are weak then you are very
mistaken. Of the last six World Series champions,
three of the teams entered the play-offs by clinching
the Wild Card. Only time will tell whether or not if
the Yankees will become the fourth team in seven years
to win the World Series, but they certainly have come
a long way.
I myself still can’t believe that the Yankees are
even one of the American League’s four play-off
representatives. If I remember correctly, dating back
to as early as April, the team was left for dead at
the bottom of American League standings. Even the
annual losers of the League, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays
won more games than they lost by the end of the first
month of the season. The Yanks were terrible, poor
pitching, poor hitting and worst of all the defense
looked as if they were chasing a wild cat on the
field. For instance, Derek Jeter was making uncommon
errors, the pitching staff seemed liked it was
throwing Batting Practice to opponents and even
Mariano Rivera seemed to have resembled a forty-eight
year old veteran on the mound lacking both dominance
and passion. That first month was easily a good excuse
for team owner George Steinbrenner to fire Manager Joe
Torre as he been wanting to do for seasons past. Every
time a game was scheduled to come on I would rather
just wait to read the results the morning rather than
to see for myself. The only bright spot for the first
half of the season was the show MVP-candidate Alex
Rodriguez was putting on. His effort instilled a
little hope in to the team and fans alike, probably
even foreshadowing that the Yanks would have turn
things around later in the year.
Thanks to the three day vacation provided by
the All-Star break, the Yankees were then brought back
to life as well as regaining the attention of their
fans, including myself. As the remainder of the season
went on the Yankees began to improve and as a result
ratings went up, merchandise sales increased and fans
were once again to claim the Yanks as their number one
team. I remember ths season really turned around,
probably even foreshadowing what the result can be of
a possible play-off match-up. The Yanks swept the Los
Angeles Angels, a key October rival that has
eliminated th Yankees in the post-season in 2002 and
2005. Since the break, the Yanks have the best record
in the American League mainly thanks to Rodriguez and
Jorge Posada coming through with clutch hits and Andy
Pettite leading the way for the pitching staff. Not to
mention the return of the old Mariano Rivera that we
have all come to know and love. Another major asset to
the Yankees clinching the Wild Card have been the
rookies that have been called up way before they were
mature enough. Rookies including Phil Hughes, Joba
Chamberlain, Ian Kennedy and Shelly Duncan. I remember
Shelly Duncan’s second game as a Yankee where he hit
his first home run and received his first curtain
call. The addition of the rookies give this year the
same feeling I got when the Yankees won it all in the
season 1996.
Just as any fan, I don’t know how far the
Yankees will go in the post-season, but can only hope
for the best. It has definitely been a season of ups
and downs with a World Series title making it all
better. I mean what else can a fan ask for than a team
that has so much diversity as well as chemistry that
never learned how to give up. To tell you the truth, I
thought that the Yankees were just waiting out the
rest of the season, just giving the rookies a.k.a..
Baby Bombers a chance to play. I was defiantly wrong
about the Yankees plan but I’m still hoping that my
World Series prediction comes true. Now, I’m going to
say this for myself and fans throughout the world: GO
Yanks!

Tyson Pleads Guilty

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson pleaded guilty Sept. 24th to charges of drug possession and driving under the influence stemming from a traffic stop last year as he was leaving a nightclub.

Tyson quietly acknowledged to a judge that he had cocaine and was impaired when he was stopped for driving erratically in Scottsdale on Dec. 29.

Tyson, 41, recently had been trying to revive his career with a series of boxing exhibitions.

The San Francisco Giants saw no reason to let their decision about whether to bring back Barry Bonds in 2008 drag on all offseason.

After all the home run records, memorable moments and controversy over steroids that marked Bonds' 15-year tenure in San Francisco, it was finally time to say bye-bye Barry.

Giants owner Peter Magowan informed Bonds of the decision during a 90-minute meeting Thursday night, telling him the team was ready to go in a new direction after three straight losing seasons.

Roughly three months removed from their longest playoff run in a decade, the Utah Jazz could have a starting lineup with less firepower next season.

In a blog post made Tuesday on the Russian Web site Sport Today, Andrei Kirilenko said he seeks a trade from the Jazz and voices his concern with playing next season for coach Jerry Sloan.

The Salt Lake Tribune confirmed that the post was made by the Jazz forward.

Kirilenko, an NBA All-Star in 2004, had his worst season last year despite the Jazz winning 51 games and advancing to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 1997-98. He played in 70 games, averaging 8.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game last season after playing in 69 games in 2005-06 and averaging 15.3 ppg, 8.0 rpg and 3.1 bpg.

Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft, will miss the 2007-08 season after undergoing microfracture surgery Thursday, two league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Oden, a 7-footer from Ohio State, was found to have torn cartilage during exploratory surgery on his right knee and was operated on by team doctor Don Roberts in Vancouver, Wash. Most microfracture surgeries require eight months to a year for recovery.

Alex Rodriguez hit a home run for the fifth consecutive game yesterday, connecting for the seventh time during that span and sending the New York Yankees past the Kansas City Royals 6-3 for a three-game sweep.

The third baseman's two-run shot off Zack Greinke in the first inning was his 52nd homer of the season and it raised his runs batted-in count to 140. He leads the major leagues in both categories.

The New England Patriots have been caught using electronic means to steal signals and otherwise violate league rules, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the New England Patriots violated league rules Sunday when they videotaped defensive signals by the New York Jets’ coaches, according to league sources. NFL security officials confiscated a camera and videotape from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella on the New England sidelines when it was suspected he was recording the Jets’ defensive signals. Sources say the visual evidence confirmed the suspicion.
